At the Lakehouse Recovery Center, we understand the anxiety and fear people can sometimes have, when they think about taking the first steps toward sobriety and recovery. Our methadone detox treatment program here at the Lakehouse Recovery Center is designed to meet people right where they are, and to provide the support necessary for people to safely, comfortably, and successfully come off the drug, and begin a healthier, happier life, free from addiction.
In cases of methadone abuse, we also understand that people can be especially apprehensive about the potential withdrawal symptoms they might experience, if they stop using.
What Is Methadone?
Methadone is a prescription drug, most often used in instances of opiate addiction or to help people who are withdrawing from opiate use. However, it can also be used as a pain killer itself and like opiates, can be highly addictive.
Because methadone is only meant to be used in carefully monitored amounts, it’s very dangerous for people to use recreationally and/or irresponsibly.
Moreover, because many people who develop methadone addiction may have used other opiates previously, there is a high risk for people to continue taking increasing amounts of methadone in order to achieve a desired high, which puts them at high risk for overdose.
Because of the withdrawal symptoms that can occur when people do stop using methadone, it’s important to have professional oversight and care, throughout the methadone detox process.
It’s important to recognize that detox from methadone is different for everyone and people may have different struggles during this time.
Symptoms of Methadone Withdrawal
With this said, some of the common symptoms we help to minimize and provide support for include things such as:
- Stomach aches
- Muscle cramping
- Low mood
Because of the combination of physical and psychological symptoms which can occur, our methadone detox program is designed to provide a full spectrum of support and guidance, throughout this time.
This not only includes oversight by physicians and mental health professionals, but also individual and group activities, designed to encourage and strengthen each person’s goals. We are especially sensitive to help people manage any shifting moods or anxiety which may arise and to guide people through these challenges.
