What’s the Best Way to Have Fun in Recovery?

Recovery

For most people, going to a place of treatment to fight their addiction sounds about as much fun as chewing on glass.  Research shows the treatment centers that incorporate recreational activities in a fun environment have  higher success rates at mitigating relapse.  Fun may be your key to getting the most out of treatment, and carrying that success into your future.  What is the best way to have fun in recovery?

Unfortunately, there is not one secret best way to have fun in recovery.  Having fun will depend on the activities you pursue, but mostly fun depends on your own mindset.  By anticipating and looking for fun in addiction treatment, and throughout recovery, you will be able to capitalize on the benefits.  Here are some good ways to have fun in recovery.

Make Some New Friends

Chances are in your recovery journey you have decided to limit or eliminate contact with some people you once called friends.  Many who are in their recovery have forgotten how to have fun sober.  What better way to learn sober fun than to have your new friends show you?  Go adventuring with them.

Explore The Globe

Speaking of adventures.  There are great places to see and people to meet.  As you travel, you will begin to see different ways of living and enjoying life that can broaden your own horizons.

Explore New Foods

If you are newish to your recovery journey then you may not be ready to travel the globe safely.  Instead you can invite the world to your table.  Have you ever eaten head cheese, or tried kimchi?  You might be surprised at how fun it is to try new foods with your new friends.

Take Up A New Hobby

If the thought of head cheese just sounds wrong to you, you can forgo the food route and pick up a new hobby.  Start with something that sounds fun to you.  You may like it.  There is an endless sea of hobbies to choose from, be it RC car racing or synchronized swimming.

Laugh

Research shows that laughter provides both mental and physical benefits.  Whatever you do in life be sure it contains a lot of laughter.  Laughter is the best medicine they say.  Laughter is a sure sign you are having fun.  When something stops making you laugh and becomes more of a chore, it may be time to move on.
