What Do You Do at Night in Rehab?

If you’re about to enter rehab to treat your addiction, congratulations! Vast numbers of people who’ve been in your shoes can attest to the life-changing power of an inpatient rehab stay. You will have long, full days that begin fairly early in the morning, filled with a large variety of programs, activities, recreation, and therapy related to overcoming your specific addiction. You’re probably wondering, though: How will I spend the hours between dinner and bedtime?

For starters, most treatment centers offer a 12-step group each weekday evening, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, or Overeaters Anonymous. This is done to familiarize you with the 12-step model, which will become a key component of your continued recovery once you return to your daily life at home. You’ll learn about the 12-step format, how to get the most out of meetings, and what to look for in a sponsor – an experienced group member who agrees to take you through the steps.

Sometimes, staffers at the treatment center, or alumni who’ve been through the program, conduct these meetings. Other times, outside local 12-step groups bring meetings to the rehab facility; the latter is known as an H&I panel, which stands for “hospitals and institutions.” H&I panels are typically brought into jails, treatment centers, and hospitals, as the name implies. Some treatment centers also bring small groups of patients out to a meeting in the community.

There will also be lots of opportunity for fun at night. Your rehab may host outings such as movie nights, trips to cafes, poetry readings, or outdoor concerts. Outings often vary by the location of your rehab and the season. In the summer, you might have an evening picnic, a bonfire with s’mores, or go to the waterfront to catch some fireworks. In December, you might go out caroling, and get your Santa on while drinking hot chocolate.

Lots of treatment centers host sober dances, with guest deejays, appetizers, and a selection of “mocktails.” Sometimes, karaoke reigns supreme. Another night might feature a pajama party, with games, late-night munchies, and party favors.

Whichever after-hours activities your treatment center offers, you’re certain to have a blast! Nighttime activities are meant to inject a healthy dose of fun into the serious business of recovery. Nighttime is also great bonding time with your fellow rehabbers. Make the most of it, and you’ll make memories and friends that can last a lifetime.
