What Are Your Priorities?

When you think of the things that are most important in your life, what comes to mind? It could be people and animals, like your family, friends, and pets. Other things like your health, career, and schooling may also be up there on your list of priorities. Now, imagine all of those things being ripped out of your life. What’s left of all those beautiful things? It’s just you, all alone, and nowhere to go.

This is a pretty grim scenario that many of us know all too well. You see, if your sobriety didn’t come to mind as THE most important thing in your life, you could be the next person to lose everything meaningful in your life. Without sobriety, we have nothing. If you don’t make staying clean and sober number one on your to-do list, you’ll be headed towards disaster in no time flat.

Losing sight of your priorities is easy to do, so stay on your toes. For instance, your gym time begins edging out your favorite meeting, or maybe you’re hitting snooze when you used to do your daily meditation. Sometimes, we need to make adjustments to our schedule. If you want to workout more, try a different day or time so that you’ll make your meeting. If you’re feeling tired, go to bed earlier so you’ll have enough time to do your morning meditation. Making little tweaks to our schedule to accommodate our sobriety is like buying ourselves a little insurance for our recovery.

For anyone with children, you may be thinking that they are your number one priority in life. This may be how you feel now, but what happens if you’re not clean and sober? What’s your priority then? It certainly isn’t them. If you don’t put your sobriety first, you will lose them and everything else in your life, it’s that simple. When you realize that you have nothing if you don’t have a sobriety date, the easier it is to put yourself first.
