Gratitude: What? How? Why?

Gratitude | Lakehouse Recovery Center

“In daily life, we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy.” – David Steindl-Rast

What is gratitude?

Leading expert on gratitude Robert Emmons, Ph.D. describes it in two parts:

  1. An affirmation that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits we’ve received.
  2. The recognition that the sources of this goodness are, at least partially, outside ourselves.

How does one begin to experience gratitude?

  • Pay closer attention to the things happening around you. This sometimes requires stopping for a few minutes and really taking in what is happening there in that moment. Use your five senses to really make yourself aware to what is going on.
  • Keep a gratitude journal. Each night, write down the things that you were grateful for that day.
  • Share your joy by telling at least one person each day what you appreciate about them.
