About one in six Americans binge drinks around four times a month, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Binge drinking is defined by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism as “drinking that brings blood alcohol concentration levels to 0.08 g/dL.” A new study from the University of Maryland suggests that binge drinking might weaken the immune system. Past research has shown that after binge drinking, the body is less able to defend against infection or injury. The new research shows that immune system disruption happens while alcohol is in the body.
