Humans Have a Connection to Nature
Human beings have a special connection to our planet that is often ignored and under-explored. We have been given an incredible opportunity to experience the world around us, yet many of us hunker down inside and play video games or stare aimlessly at the TV.
In active addiction, didn’t we do enough of this? It is said that we are spiritual beings having a human experience…so let that spirit out to see what this human experience is all about!
If you’ve ever sat on the beach and looked dreamily into the horizon, surrounded by the sound of waves crashing onto the sand, did you feel just a little bit smaller? Have you gone into the desert on a cool evening, and gazed up at the stars overhead? Or camped in the mountains on a warm summer night, and listened to the hoots of the owls and the songs of the coyotes?
If you have had any of these wonderful experiences, take yourself back to how you felt when you were there. When we are out in the great outdoors, our problems seem to shrink in size and grow in manageability.
Active Addiction
In active addiction, we had problems left and right. We numbed ourselves to them, hoping they would all disappear. When we get sober, we have to deal with those problems, but we GET to overcome them. Recovery is a gift, and it’s one that not many are fortunate to experience. If you are new, be gentle on yourself. Recovery doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen.
We get to go surfing, or try snowboarding. Our souls crave excitement by nature as addicts and alcoholics. We feed our cravings by trying new experiences and pushing ourselves to new levels of life.
In doing so, we actively reprogram our brains to turn toward the natural highs of life than the high produced by drugs and alcohol. Each time we engage in a thrilling, natural experience, we weaken the bond between the brain and drugs or alcohol. The more adventure in nature we have, the more our brain learns that drugs and alcohol are no longer a solution.
We are located in nature’s backyard because we are passionate about sharing recovery that works, with people just like you. At the Lakehouse Recovery Center, we enjoy life. Kayaking, hiking, fishing, yoga, and boating are just a few of the things we do to nourish our souls, and those of our clients. Call us, recovery is possible, and yours can begin today.
