Fresh air can be a great addition to your recovery toolbelt. Performing physical activities outside has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety, improve coping skills, promote physical well being, and builds relationships with others while also giving a feeling of accomplishment. There are plenty opportunities to experience these adventures without traveling for hours, you just have to learn where to look.
Ask the People Who Are in the Outdoor Business
The quickest way to find out where the local adventures are is to ask the people who are exploring them every day. Find your local bike or other outdoor sports store and ask them where some of best places to check out are. If you are looking to take up a new hobby they may even be able to recommend where to get lessons or the best way to get started.
Join a Group
No matter where you call home, chances are there is a local outdoor group of some sort. Most cities will have groups that meet up for running, bicycling, hiking, swimming, surfing, or even just walking. Join one of these groups and you’ll learn where the best places to explore are in your city and meet some cool new people to enjoy them with.
Pretend You’re a Tourist
Exploring your city like a tourist can sometimes introduce you to wonders that you may have overlooked or never knew existed. Most cities and states have a tourism board and website informing visitors of all the points of interest a locale has to offer. Hop online and print off a list of all must-sees your state has to offer. Chances are there will be plenty that you haven’t checked out.
Check out All the Parks Around You
No matter where you live there is a park near you. A great way to get outside and on an awesome adventure is by making a parks bucket list. State and National Parks are all around you. Print off a list of parks in your area and make a plan to mark off each one as you visit them. You’ll get a sense of accomplishment and get to experience a part of your home state that you had no clue existed.
Just Get Lost
Sometimes the best destination is a non-destination. Go out and explore your city with no plans at all. Park your car and go explore your city on foot with no specific plans. You will be surprised where the day can take you if you just let it.
