A Blended Approach to Recovery

A Blended Approach Has Many Benefits

Recovery isn’t just about stopping drinking or using. You also have to find out what led you down the path of addiction in the first place. There are so many things that factor into addiction. Mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety are common reasons people pick up and self-medicate themselves.

But there are other reasons, too. Life can be overwhelming, and some of us run from it. A broken heart, a lost job, financial struggles, trust issues, unfulfilled dreams, not feeling good enough, or never having enough time to do whatever it is you feel pressured to finish…all of these things are part of life, but for some of us, they push us over the edge.

See What Works For You

As you grow in recovery, you’ll find that these things don’t just go away. You may find that using a holistic approach to address all of the issues that drove you to addiction, the addiction itself, and all of the problems that accompany it, is the most effective and sustainable way of living in recovery. Experiment with what works for you. Yoga, meditation, a 12 Step recovery program, cognitive behavioral therapy, and acupuncture —or any combination of these approaches—may work for you.

Or it could be surfing, spiritual services, therapy, and mindfulness that help you live your best life. There is no single “right” method of recovery. Everyone is different, so don’t worry about what others are or aren’t doing. Find what works for you and go with it.

Your coping mechanisms will strengthen, and your old ways and bad habits of dealing with problems will fade away. This part of recovery is so important. Since you cannot use drugs or alcohol to cope anymore, you must use the tools you’ve learned in treatment to handle your problems and respond to them appropriately. Change is hard, but addiction is harder. Sobriety is a lifestyle that you get to do. You don’t have to stay, but you get to. Be proud of the choice you made to live in recovery, and your life will reflect its rewards.
